Anything Can Happen On Gameday

Updated: Feb 7, 2020

Good morning my loyal Painkillers, retro gamers, and newbies to the site. Welcome to another edition of Grab A Buddy Monday. Its the start of September, so you know what that means? The NFL season is just about to start, or just began depending on when this article drops. You know what this time also means? That everyone that still plays Madden, has picked up a copy the past few weeks. Some of you my not be old enough to remember this,(and why are you here? I don’t write for kids!) but there was a time where Madden wasn’t the only game in town. It’s time to grab your buddy, hook up your PS1, and let’s play NFL Gameday 98.

This PlayStation exclusive came out in November 1997, and was developed and published by 989 Sports. It was the first football video game to use 3D polygonal graphics. It featured all of the NFL teams, players, and stadiums at the time.

I had a lot of fun playing this game. It was very easy to pick up the controller and play. This game was very well received, and even was reviewed better than Madden in some magazines at the time. This is what is missing now, competition. Unfortunately, there will probably never be games like the NFL Gameday series, or NFL 2K coming down the road, since EA still owns the exclusive license to all NFL games possibly indefinite. Even if they didn’t hold the license, there is no guarantee that a company would take the risk in making and trying to compete with Madden. Madden forever I guess! That’s all for now! Until next time everyone!
