Confusion With Sagas
Updated: Feb 7
You try figureing it out when you were like, 8… Jeeze
Good morning my loyal Painkillers, anime fans, and Dragonball lovers. Welcome to another addition of Anime Wednesday. Today I’m going to talk about two different sagas that I, and possibly many others thought that it was just one big saga. So growing up, when I heard someone mention Saiyan Saga, I always thought that they were talking about the first chapter in the DBZ story arch. From the first episode until Vegeta leaves Earth, after getting his ass kick just made sense. Doing research to write this article, I have discovered that these are actually two different story archs, Raditz Saga and Vegeta Saga. So then, let’s dive in and take a look at them.
The Raditz Saga is the first 4 or 7 episodes in the Dragonball Z series(depending on which boxset or version of the show you are watching.) So let’s hit the key points. Raditz lands on Earth, to find his brother Goku. Raditz smacks down Goku and kidnapps Gohan. With help from Piccolo(who is still evil at this time), Goku is able to beat Raditz, but is killed in the process. Before he passes on, Raditz informs Piccolo that the two remaining Saiyans heard everything, including about the Dragonballs, and will make their way to Earth. It will take them one year to get there.
The Vegeta Saga, are the next set of episodes. I’m not even going to try to tell you what episodes fall into this sage, cause they are all over the place depending on what version or boxset you are watching. Its not so much where it begains, its where it ends is the issue. So quick review, Goku is in heaven, and is allowed to keep his body so that he can trained with King Kai to prepare to fight the Saiyans. The other Z fighters also go off to train. Piccolo seeing Gohan’s potential during the fight with Raditz, takes Gohan to train him for the fight. One year goes by, Goku is wished back to life, and the Saiyans, Nappa and Vegeta arrive on Earth. The other fighters confront the two Saiyans, while Goku races from King Kai’s planet to make it to the battlefield.
More like the Pain family vacation home…
I enjoy these series, because they start to answer some questions that myself and others had about Goku that weren’t answered in the original Dragonball series. These sagas were probably many people’s first exposure to the Dragonball franchise, and kicking things off with some action, and seeing where things would go from there was very enjoyable. If you haven’t watched this before, where have you been, and what is wrong with you, or if you haven’t seen it in a while, it just might be time to do so. Untill next time everyone!
