Fireflies All Around!
Updated: Feb 7, 2020
Good morning my loyal Painkillers, and anime fans, and welcome to the latest installment of Saturday Morning Cinema. Today, I have a really good one for you guys. Its not everyday we get to talk about an anime that is based on a semi-autobiographical short story. So then, let’s right into it. Here is Grave of the Fireflies.
Released in 1988, it is based on the 1967 book with the same name. The movie tells the story of two siblings Seita and Setsuko. Set in Kobe,Japan during the final months of World War 2, most of the town is destroyed due to bombing. Seita and Setsuko survive their house being bombed. They were unharmed, but their mother died from severe burns to her body. They move in with their aunt, and begin their journey to survive the rest of the war.
This movie is beyond good. Its one of those few movies out there that are from the perspective of children, and its done really well. I am keeping this short on purpose, because I definitely don’t want to give a lot away. If you plan on watching this for yourself, keep a box of tissues nearby, because this movie will hit you in the feels hard! Check it out for yourself on Hulu, but don’t say that I didn’t warn you about those tissues. Until next time everyone.
