Golden State Fun
Updated: Feb 7, 2020
Good morning my loyal Painkillers, retro gamers, and newbies to the site. Welcome to another edition of Grab A Buddy Monday. Today I have a good, but odd one for you today. So what do you get, when you take a bunch of events and stick into one big video game? Normally it will be an Olympic game, but not this time. It’s tine to grab your buddy, hook up your Sega Master System, and its time to play California Games.
This game came out in 1987, originally for the Apple 2 and Commodore 64, then for all the home consoles that were out at that time. I’m talking about the Sega Master System one, since it was the one that I know the best. This game took events, that probably at the time, couldn’t fill out an entire game alone, and put them on one game. Why California? I guess cause all of these events were popular in that state. Some of the events changed depending on what system you had the game for, but the ones that were on all copies were half-pipe, roller staking, surfing, bmx, footbag which is hacky sack, and flying disk which is frisbee.
This game is fun. It does has it downsides, such as the controls are a bit awkward. Its not like the normal games that I do for these articles, since you have to take turns playing instead of both players playing at the same time. The main reason why I picked this game was to show how far games like skate boarding and bmx, have gone from the 80s until they stop making good games in this genre. Hopefully, these games will make a comeback, and actually be good. Don’t worry if you can’t find the Master System copy of this game, as I stated earlier, this game was probably on every system that was out at the time, so you have choices. Hell, try to find it on multiple systems, and play all the exclusive events for each system. Until next time everyone!
