‘Luci in the Sky With Demons’
Greetings, Leaguelettes. Allow me to welcome you to the first issue of our newest multi-part series: Hallowed be thy Game! Wherein we take a peek at videogames inspired by religious and/or demonic themes.
Every issue of HbtG will feature its own singular title OR cover an entire series that fits the bill. I suppose its only prudent that I provide some kind of disclaimer so…
If you find religious themes distasteful or offensive; begone with you. Shoo, shoo! This show ain’t worth your two bits.
Now without further ado, I present you our first piece: (Shin)Megami Tensei. First unleashed upon the world in September; 1987 by publisher ATLUS, Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei would be the start of a cult following spanning EVERY major console produced in the last three decades.
In the Famicom original, you assume the role of an unnamed youth living in Japan. After several nights filled with bizarre dreams of rescuing the souls of three individuals, the youth discovers that a scientist has developed the means of opening a portal to the netherworld! Soon after, demons begin to spew forth and roam the countryside. The rest of the world gets wind of this, and decides the best course of action is the thermonuclear destruction of Tokyo. Good times…
All the while, the youth had been given a special program recieved in an email that allows him to communicate with demons and even recruit them as allies; a recurring feature throughout the MegaTen series, albeit in varying ways.
This hits a little close to home…
As per usual, I won’t be divulging much else in-way of plot. Not that I imagine it would be helpful considering nearly every title of the series follows a unique story. What remains throughout however is the constant struggle between chaos, order and humanity clutching desparately for survival.
Did I happen to mention the creepy-ass atmosphere? (Ass-mos-phere?Assmosfear…Assmosphear I like it!)
At any rate, I HIGHLY recommend giving the series a try. Not sure where to start? Below is a list of perfectly fine places to sink your teeth into this delicious IP.
Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei (Of course~)
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga
I implore you give at least one of these titles a chance. If not for me, do it for ole Jack Frost.
With that, I take my leave of you. But frett not my loyal Leaguelettes, part two of HbtG will be here before you know it.
